Biographisches Handbuch des deutschen Auswärtigen Dienstes 1871-1945 [Biographical Handbook on the German Foreign Service, 1871–1945]
Commissioned by the Federal Foreign Office this reference work comprises five volumes, and contains biographical information of all employees in higher Foreign Service between 1871 and 1945.
The entries include Germany’s foreign ministers as well as all civil servants and employees in higher Foreign Service. It encompasses research fellows, officers and state secretaries in the Headquarters in Berlin, furthermore diplomats, consuls, interpreters and experts for commerce, economy, culture and press at German missions abroad.
Using the Foreign Office’s personnel files, which were fully reviewed for the first time, as well as a large number of other sources, this publication provides information in a standardised form on the individuals’ biographical data, background, family, religion, education, party membership, and career in and outside the Foreign Service. The entries include photographs, lists of relevant literature and information on the location of personal papers.
